4. Examples & Templates
We've created, adapted and validated Accessible EPUB Template for early grade reading storybooks. We've have tried hard to make it almost as easy as copying and pasting your content into the template.
Throughout this toolkit, and in the Step by Step Guide, we use the templates below as a starting point.
Click here to access the template on GitHub. We use GitHub as we are working to iterate and improve the template. Join the GitHub repository as a contributor and you can contribute changes!
We've converted an additional 49 early grade readers and teachers guides from USAID Tusome Literacy Program in Kenya, also on GitHub. These EPUBS are all open source, and you are free to reuse and improve them as needed for your project.
Example EPUB Adapted for Learners with Visual Impairments and Print Disabilities
This version of the African Storybook early grade reader, Kariza akunda kubaza, is adapted for learners with visual impairments and print disabilities. Good news, the EPUB can be used by anyone! Some key adaptations include:
- Full text works with screen readers and text to speech engines
- Image descriptions
- Dyslexic fonts
- Supports ARIA navigation
Example EPUB Adapted for Learners who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
This version of the African Storybook early grade reader, Kariza akunda kubaza, includes the adaptations for learners with visual impairments and print disabilities. We've then embedded videos signed in Rwanda Sign Language.
